چکیده

Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) is an understorey, forest tree which sustains conspicuous and substantial herbivory from the larvae of a geometrid moth, Cleora scriptaria. This study examined the relationship between leaf abscission and the amount of damage a leaf had sustained. In the field, kawakawa trees showed no increase in the rate of leaf shedding in response to experimental damage by C. scriptaria larvae or to artificial damage produced by a hole punch, even when 90% of the leaf area was removed. The tree did not compensate for a loss in leaf area by increasing the chlorophyll content of damaged leaves. Although herbivore damage is conspicuous and appears detrimental, the tree’s leaf phenology does not appear to be affected. It is concluded that this plant species has evolved to tolerate frequent and severe feeding damage to its leaves. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Herbivore Damage and Leaf Loss in the New Zealand Pepper Tree (‘kawakawa’; Macropiper Excelsum; Piperaceae)

New Zealand Journal of Ecology (1998) 22(2): 173-180 ©New Zealand Ecological Society suggested as a diagnostic feature of the plant (Beever, 1987). Although C. scriptaria feeds on some other host plants (Spiller and Wise, 1982) and kawakawa is host to a few other herbivore species (Spiller and Wise, 1982; Clare and Singh, 1988), kawakawa is the primary host plant of C. scriptaria larvae (Hudson...

Induced defences in kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum): do caterpillars avoid previous leaf damage?

This study examined whether two species of lepidopteran larvae (Cleora scriptaria and Epiphyas postvittana) were deterred from feeding on the leaves of kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) after the leaves had been damaged in three different ways: by larval feeding, using a hole punch or a metal rasp. A hierarchy of choice experiments was performed in the laboratory, examining the feeding ‘preference...

Comparison of a compatible and an incompatible pepper-tobamovirus interaction by biochemical and non-invasive techniques: chlorophyll a fluorescence, isothermal calorimetry and FT-Raman spectroscopy.

Leaves of a pepper cultivar harboring the L(3) resistance gene were inoculated with Obuda pepper virus (ObPV), which led to the appearance of hypersensitive necrotic lesions approx. 72 h post-inoculation (hpi) (incompatible interaction), or with Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) that caused no visible symptoms on the inoculated leaves (compatible interaction). ObPV inoculation of leaves resulted...

Evaluation of defoliation on leaf water relations, chlorophyll content, and grain yield of triticale (x triticosecale wittmack) genotypes under water stress

ABSTRACT Optimizing the source size and its utilization by the sink is one of the main factors enhancing the yield potential and decreasing water demand in crops when exposed to drought. To investigate the effect of defoliation on leaf water relations, chlorophyll content and yield components of five triticale genotypes including Sanabad, Juanillo, ET-83-3, ET-84-5 and ET-84-8 under well-watere...

Frost resistance and susceptibility to ice formation during natural hardening in relation to leaf anatomy in three evergreen tree species from New Zealand.

Foliar frost resistance of three endemic New Zealand land trees, Nothofagus menziesii (Hook. f.) Oerst. (Fagaceae), Pittosporum eugenioides A. Cunn. (Pittosporaceae) and Griselinia littoralis Forst. f. (Cornaceae), was examined as the trees hardened from late summer to midwinter in a lowland forest site. The lowest temperatures causing 50% damage (LT(50)) occurred in late winter and were simila...
